They don't make them like this anymore:

No they don't!

My favorite aircraft are the century series, the F-4, and the EE Lightning. Looks, technology, history--it's all there. The aircraft that came after were simply the implications of the above, carried forward mechanically and implimented by committee. ;-)

Ed, if you had to choose, would you rather go for a flight in a Thud or a Phantom?

And . . . what the heck does it feel, sound and look like going supersonic on the deck? There is in particular one scene in When Thunder Rolled where you are in a a jam and punched through supersonic and the reader really gets a sense of it.

Thanks!

I second this guy's question. I never really thought much about being a pilot (USAF, USN, or commercial) because my eyesight is uneven (my left eye in particular is terrible), but flight has always fascinated me. Jet fighters especially - they just look like the ultimate embodiment of man's ultimate dream, the power to soar and roar, turn and burn.

Good video, with a great song in the background, and it's topic is a wonderful piece of machinery. They call the Phantom the "Double Ugly", but I've always considered it one of the better looking fighters. Although the other nickname I've heard ("The Ultimate Triumph of Thrust over Aerodynamics") is a funny one.
