Because He Says So

Take a look at this one:

Ft Monroe Declared National Monument

My problem is that I don't see how the declaration is supposed to result in "creation" of 3000 jobs. Jay Carney apparently can't see it either so he follows the usual script of punting responsibility to someone else.

Governor Said It First But Messiah Believes It

You see, it was a government installation that shut down. That usually means that existing government jobs were eliminated. How many? Hard to measure. Usually shut-down of a military installation of any kind has an impact multiplier effect. The immediate reduction in force is echoed by the loss of jobs in surrounding small businesses that catered to the government staff.

So, at the very best, the declaration of Ft. Monroe as a National Monument will preserve the facility. It will require some maintenance staff along with security and docent personnel. Such a staff would be a small component of an active installation's employment rosters.

None of the jobs would really be producing consumer products and therefore generating a positive impact on GDP.

I suppose when the President relieves himself first thing in the morning he reports creation of a dozen new jobs all along the sewer pipeline.

Is that his version of "Trickle Down Economics"?
