Somehow the reality of the welcome effectively overcomes the characterizations of the media. The crowd was enthusiastic and the affection wasn't phony.
During the live broadcast you could barely make out Nolan Ryan asking the President where he wanted him to stand--maybe that was a precaution from the soft of embarrassing weak sister toss of the Messiah earlier in the season. There were no theatrics, no big wind-ups, no pomp or circumstance attached. Just a ball thrown crisply to a Hall-of-Famer behind the plate who didn't have to stretch to catch it or field a grounder.
Then Bush senior and his gracious wife, Barbara, sat with Bush-the-younger and his classy bride, Laura, in the front row seats. No luxury box. No isolation from the beer-drinking crowd. No major security perimeter visible or disrupting the game.
Do you miss him yet?

Ed, I've missed him since January of 2008. The Bush family has class and the Obamas don't.
A Naval Attack Pilot, and a pretty damn good one by all accounts, and a fighter pilot. Would one expect less? regards, Alemaster
It was good to see them both out there and no two people in the world have more class than Barbara and Laura.
I was not a fan of his domestic policies but I loved him as a Commander in Chief, and yeah between him, Obama and Clinton, for me he wins hands down.
I was sad that he tried all that "BiPartisan" reaching across the table stuff in an effort to get along with the Dems, it was his biggest mistake.
I believe the man has regrets for actions taken in office. I think he would do a great deal differently having seen where his initial feints have taken us.
But he had respect for the office, for the job, and for the Republic. And the First Ladies? Just that. Ladies. It was warming to see the reception in that video...the people know...
