Modern Miracle

I'm old and stodgy. I'm skeptical and curmudgeonly. I'm cynical that our best days are past and the future isn't very bright. Then something like this comes along and I begin to wonder what the future may hold:

Take a look at YouTube for "3D Printing" and you will be amazed at the spread of this technology. Several companies are offering products and apparently usage is spreading very rapidly for design, prototyping and developmental activity.

Where are the kids who dream this stuff up being educated? The Public Schools in my area aren't producing world class thinkers.

Wanna seriously blow your mind?

Look up "reprap" and "mendel".

This is an open source 3d printer project. Well, "project". More like, "movement".

It's a homebrew, hackers' system, working with resin gels rather than powders. One of the stated goals is to develop the system to the point where a mendal can replicate itself — a true von Neuman machine.

Can't do the electronics or motors, yet. Still needs steel rods for rigidity in the framework.

But as the system gets more and more sophisticated, and materials improve, more and more mendel parts are being made by mendels. I believe it's even possible to get starter kits of all the custom parts that can be made with mendels, to which you add your own off the shelf stuff. (Or, of course, obtain a complete kit so you can just get started.)

And Rome almost developed the steam engine...

You may be old and stodgy but at least you can make it to YouTube. I'd heard about these 3D printers a bunch of times and never once thought to tap a few keys and go get a look-see.

Wow! WOW!

I said something perfectly stupid to my 18-year-old while watching this: By the time you're my age these will be commonplace appliances in every household. No, she corrected me, they will be quaint old antiques in museums.

Viva la future!

By the way, that should have been "old and stodgy" with emphasis on the quotation marks, as in your words, not mine.
