Facing the Nation

Christina Olds has just spent a couple of days at the National Museum of the USAF, participating in the National Aviation Hall of Fame inductions, and the Dayton Air Show. Reports are that she had a great time and got to meet a lot of readers of "Fighter Pilot".

National Museum of USAF Honors Robin's Memory

Notice, buried in that nice coverage of her visit, the mention that Fighter Pilot is now in its fourth (!) printing!

Next step on her world tour is Oshkosh for the EAA fly-in week. Should be something like a goat-roping, barn-raising and rodeo all wrapped up in one! If you are in the neighborhood, drop by and say "hi!"

Ed,

I am more than halfway through the book. An awesome read, and some great insight into the mind and into the times.

Regards,

Newbius

This spring, before I ever heard of a blog called Thunder Tales, or authors Christina Olds and Ed Rasimus, I read an enthusiastic book review in the Wall Street Journal. Some equally enthusiastic letters to the WSJ editor soon followed. In a few days, my copy of Fighter Pilot: The Memoirs of Legendary Ace Robin Olds arrived by mail.

The late Brig. Gen Robin Olds has been a hero of mine since high school. With 16 official kills, including four MiGs over North Vietnam, Olds was arguably America’s top ace and by far our most brilliant aerial tactician. In a war with too few heroes, he was larger than life. Of course Olds was much more than a great fighter pilot. He showed what exceptional leaders can do to cut red tape and make a broken system work. He also knew how to fight and win, a lesson our nation’s political leaders failed to heed.

If you love flying, world or military history, or just a fast-paced biography, you will love this book. And for those who did not fly fighters, there are wonderful insights into both air-to-air and air-to-ground operations in aircraft ranging from the P-38 to the F-4 Phantom. For those who have a son or daughter in high school or college, this will make great summer reading. There is still a discounted price (at least when you order online).

Let us hope that by the time you get your copy, Raz is on strip alert to work on the movie version. It will be a blockbuster.

Very much enjoyed your first two books (When Thunder Rolled and Palace Cobra). Just finished "Fighter Pilot" and I am grateful that you and Christina Olds captured the history for all of us. A terrific read.
Looking forward to seeing the F-4 fly at Oshkosh next week and meeting Ms. Olds.
Best,
Wilko
