I honestly don't think he "forgot" but rather that his voice is pretty much gone and he can no longer hit the notes. Add to this he was apparently trying to do a "joe cocker" version of the song and... He's probably so fried he thought it was good.
I was a front-man for half my life and LOVED doing this song, thought the Crowes were seriously rockin' until I learned the truth about this one.
