Racist Chant

In what may be the hands-down champion for incredible events we get this story from San Antonio this morning:

Students Chastised for Racist Chanting After Victory

Did you get that? The team wins the game and in a moment reminiscent of the Miracle on Ice in the 1978 Winter Olympics they break out in the chant of "USA, USA, USA...."

Can't let that sort of racist thing happen in America. No way!

Are you kidding me? Are these people serious?

Not sure what to say on this. The teams were, according to the article, already racially polarized so the deep feeling of "us" vs "them" with a racial connection was probably unavoidable. The content of the chant, however, was nationalistic, not racial, of course but I doubt anyone there would have missed the ethnic undertone. On one hand I might fault the coaches for choosing the "best" players rather than striving for a racially integrated mix but, then again, it's "the American Way" to strive for the win and forget all other issues. Bottom line is probably that the whole complex situation is "SNAFU".

Both districts are now just trying to move past this disturbing incident.
