I get the distinct feeling that the artist is interpreting someone's fuzzy dream (nightmare ?): racing home after expending all munitions (including the standard 'just in case' load of two AIM-7s on the aft stations).
I find it dreamy, since none of the remaining suspension equipment matches reality in design nor color. Do waves ever crash on the beach of a river or small lake? Sure, the trailing very low aircraft might churn them up after it had passed - but it reminds me of the Jodi Foster edge-of-the-universe 'wormhole' beach scene in the science-fiction classic, "Contact". The waves run in reverse as she meets an alien posing in the form of her dead father.
The painting is well done, otherwise - but I somehow think that even a talented artist has a duty to research the equipment he will be portraying, for historical accuracy. Maybe I'm too critical . . .
Well, the geography looks a lot like some places along the coast N. of Haiphong near the pork chop, or among the karst and stream formations of Steel Tiger around Rte 9. Problematic in the picture is why the lead aircraft is C/L only and the poor wingman is wall-to-wall in a very inefficient armed recce configuration. It isn't too far off a Fast-FAC team, but there wouldn't be a C/L tank. No wonder the poor guy is in reheat.
